Can Taking Soup Good for Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

 IBS patients should avoid to consume soup with additives that can trigger IBS symptoms

What is soup?

Soup is a food made from meat or vegetables. This is one such food, In which the food is diluted by adding water. And spices are used to improve its taste.

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

IBS is a chronic gut disorder. In which the death of the patient does not occur, but his life becomes restless. If a person gets this disorder, it can lasts for the rest of his life. It has many symptoms like diarrhoea, constipation, gas, flatulence, indigestion, cramping in the intestines etc.

The symptoms of this disease are different in each patient. And these symptoms keep changing.
Due to these changing symptoms, the patient also suffers from mental anxiety. IBS patients also have poor sleep.

There are several types of IBS such as IBS-C, IBS-D and IBS-M etc.

IBS-C

This is the most severe form of IBS in which the patient is constantly constipated. Due to this condition, the patient also suffers a lot of pain and anxiety. Patient does not sleep well.

IBS-D

IBS-D is one such condition. Due to this condition, the patient who has constant diarrhea can also have inflammation in the intestines and stomach.

IBS-M

This is one such type of IBS in which the patient is most anxious. Because its changing symptoms make the patient mentally ill as well. This patient sometimes gets diarrhea and sometimes gets constipated. 

Soup is a food that is full of nutrients and deliciousness. Its taste is due to the spices used in its preparation. Examples of ingredients used in making this soup are like garlic and onion, so they make this soup a high FODMAP food.

Can taking Soup is favorable in IBS?

IBS patients should consume soup in less amount because the spices in the soup can trigger IBS symptoms. And it is necessary to consume it, after meals. IBS patients should never consume soup on an empty stomach. While taking soup, the patient should always consume the soup in small quantity and secondly, the spices in it should be used sparingly.

IBS-C and Soup

Different kinds of soups are there some are made-up from chicken, beef or mutton where as in some there are more vegetable are added. It is good for normal persons but can be problematic for IBS patients.

Now an IBS-C patient who has frequent constipation and if he consumes the soup, it happens that this patient can gets relief from constipation for a while. The ingredients in the soup i.e., if fibers are added, can soften the food in intestines. But the patient should take care to consume this soup only for a short period time until he gets some benefit. 
Note that it is beneficial for IBSC patients. But if  the patient uses it unnecessarily, he may face problems.

IBS-D and Soup

IBS-D patients should not consume soup at all, because IBS-D patients already have diarrhea and it can form gas in intestines that can be more problematic for patient.

If an IBS patient develops symptoms after consuming soup, what should they do?

If the patient develops diarrhea after consuming the soup, the patient should follow following.

  • Eat ice cream in case of gas, indigestion and heartburn.
  • You can also take coffee, which is made from Fennel, cinnamon, cardamom.
  • In case of irritation, drink cold water.
  • If the symptoms are not controlled, consult a doctor.
